Italy is one of the countries in the world with the largest number of tunnels in the road and rail transportation system. The modernization of existing tunnels and the construction of new tunnels in the last 10 years has been a great challenge that the country has faced with the utmost dedication and willingness to innovate.
The panel discussion on Safety and Resilience of Road Tunnels in Italy aimed to share the Italian "case history" of the construction, renovation and maintenance of road tunnels following the application of the EU directive, adapting it to its experience and particular orographic situation. The experience derived from the international experience with the participation in the PIARC Technical Committee on Road Tunnels has been particularly important to improve the different situations Italy has faced.
